Over 90,000 sq km across Western James Bay and North Ontario coast moving towards protected status

August 2021

The Mushkegowuk Council and government of Canada have reached an agreement (MOU) to advance a National Marine Conservation Area for western James Bay and the north Ontario Coast. This demonstrates what is possible when we realize the full potential of Indigenous driven marine protection in Canada.

Oceans North, alongside other key partners, worked hard to support this milestone through meeting coordination, issuing of original science reports, bringing the current University of Manitoba marine science expedition to James Bay, the creation of the website, media outreach and communication products, through fundraising, and good faith advice and partnership throughout. The Becht Foundation will continue to support Oceans North to maximise the momentum in Canada towards marine protections.
