Many of the world’s surf breaks are located alongside coral reefs, mangroves, seagrass and coastal forests with high biodiversity value. Conservation International’s Surf Protected Area model uses the connection between surfing communities and the ocean as a starting point for locally led marine conservation.

We are supporting Conservation International, working with Konservasi Indonesia and other partners, to expand the network of Surf Protected Areas in Indonesia from 30 to 50. The project aims to protect, manage and restore approximately 4,400 km² of marine and coastal ecosystems surrounding 150 waves.

Working with communities and government agencies, the project will establish 20 new Surf Protected Areas, strengthen existing sites and support improved management across three larger marine protected areas. It will also help communities develop sustainable financing initiatives and conservation-linked businesses. Alongside this work in Indonesia, Conservation International will develop guidance, funding and partnerships to help expand the Surf Protected Area approach internationally.
