Advancing high-protein alternatives for soybean meal in animal & fish feed, by investing in UK Agritech company, DryGro
DryGro was founded in 2015 and operates a pilot production facility in Kenya. DryGro produces Lemna, a high-protein crop that can directly substitute for soybean meal in animal and fish feed. Using its proprietary growing system, DryGro can produce animal and fish feed protein 8x faster, using 1/8th of the land area and 99% less water than traditional soy meal. Soy is one of the four largest crops in the world. By 2050 it is projected to increase its land-use more than any other crop, becoming a leading driver of global deforestation and biodiversity loss.
The Becht Foundation’s mission is protection and restoration of our planet’s biodiversity. We recognise the role food-systems play in environmental degradation and the opportunity they present to cease and reverse habitat-loss. The investment in DryGro will enable scaling up of its production facility in Kenya and, testing and research for Lemna-use to lead to commercial-scale production by 2022.
