Indonesia is home to some of the world’s richest marine biodiversity and has committed to protecting 30% of its waters by 2045. Achieving this ambition will require protection not only around its coasts and islands, but also across its extensive offshore waters.

We are supporting Conservation International, working in partnership with Konservasi Indonesia, as they work with the Government of Indonesia to secure the designation of the country’s first large-scale marine protected area. The proposed area would safeguard 89,000 km² of ocean off the west coast of Sumatra, including important habitat and migratory routes for whales, dolphins, sharks and sea turtles, as well as spawning grounds for pelagic fish.

The project will provide the scientific evidence, government coordination and stakeholder engagement needed to secure legal designation and develop the area’s zoning, governance and management arrangements. Supported alongside the Blue Nature Alliance, this work aims to lay the foundations for effective, sustainably financed protection and provide a model for further large-scale marine conservation across Indonesia.
