Campaigning to end overfishing in Canada and restore abundance to Canada’s wild fish
According to Oceana Canada’s latest Fishery Audit , a mere one-third of Canada’s fisheries can be considered healthy, and most critically depleted fish populations don’t have a solid plan in place to help them recover.
Our grant will support a collaboration between Oceana Canada and Only One Collective on a campaign to end overfishing in Canada and restore abundance to Canada’s wild fish. A core component of this collaboration will be a nationwide digital marketing campaign aimed at mobilising individuals to support and apply pressure to the Fisheries Ministeries and Canadian government. This will include mobilising people in calling on the government for three key outcomes: (i) closing the critically depleted capelin fishery until it can be proven that the population is growing out of the critical zone; (ii) Implementing the rebuilding regulations in line with the established framework, and that they swiftly be applied to all remaining fish stocks; (iii) counting all sources of fishing when making quota decisions to stop overfishing, including what’s caught for bait and recreational fisheries.
