Canada reaches over 14% marine protection as it declares 44K sq km protected off Nova Scotia

Canada has now protected 14.5% of it seas and is one step closer to its target of protecting 30% of its seas by 2030 by announcing the largest new fisheries closure in Atlantic Canada, called the Eastern Canyons Marine Refuge covering 43,976 square kilometres off Nova Scotia. The Becht Foundation is pleased to partner with Oceans North on this important step that will protect deep-sea ecosystems that are home to deep-water corals, sponges and bottle-nosed whales from effects of overfishing.
