Protecting half the planet by supporting High Seas Alliance in their work towards a UN treaty to protect the high seas
High Seas Alliance (HSA) is a global coalition of over 40 environmental NGOs and IUCN that has been working towards protecting almost 50% of the planet that is the high seas. The high seas include some of the most biologically important, least protected, and most critically threatened ecosystems in the world.
There are currently no legally binding mechanisms for establishing marine protected areas outside States’ territorial seas, or for undertaking environmental impact assessments. This leaves high seas vulnerable to current and future threats such as overfishing and deep-sea mining. The Becht Foundation funding will support HSA in its work to ensure that negotiations result in a global treaty that includes robust and effective conservation measures to safeguard the high seas.
