Using the law to support more sustainable fisheries in Europe

June 2026

Overfishing, illegal fishing and the incidental capture of marine wildlife continue to place significant pressure on ocean ecosystems. Although the European Union has established laws intended to support sustainable fisheries, gaps in enforcement, monitoring and transparency can prevent those laws from delivering their intended protection.

Becht Foundation has supported ClientEarth’s fisheries work since 2020. Through legal action and advocacy, ClientEarth works to strengthen the implementation and enforcement of fisheries laws and ensure that public authorities uphold their environmental obligations.

We have renewed our support for ClientEarth as it continues this work across Europe. The next phase will use legal expertise and strategic interventions to promote greater accountability, improve the protection of vulnerable marine species and support the recovery of fish populations and marine ecosystems.
