Unlocking new markets for ocean farmers

February 2025

Regenerative ocean farming has the potential to transform coastal economies while restoring marine ecosystems. GreenWave is at the forefront of this movement, working with ocean farmers throughout North America to build the infrastructure needed to create a resilient and equitable blue economy.

By developing new market pathways for seaweed farmers, GreenWave is tackling critical barriers to growth. One of the most promising opportunities is seaweed-based biostimulants – natural soil enhancers that support agriculture while reducing reliance on synthetic fertilisers and water usage. Despite a $2 billion global market, this sector remains relatively undeveloped in the United States, and current products rely on wild-harvested seaweed sourced overseas. GreenWave’s approach prioritises building a sustainable supply chain, ensuring that farmers can supply this emerging market with cultivated seaweed while securing fair prices for their crops.

This work not only supports ocean farmers by expanding market opportunities but also strengthens GreenWave’s long-term sustainability by creating a reliable revenue stream. With greater market certainty, more farmers will be encouraged to enter the sector, knowing they have access to a viable market and a fair, predictable income for their crops.

Building on years of research, successful pilot projects and growing farmer networks, GreenWave is now scaling up its production capacity and enhancing engagement with the agricultural sector. Expanding access to processing infrastructure and market connections will accelerate adoption, creating a model that can be replicated in coastal communities across North America.

We are excited to support this next phase of GreenWave’s work and its vision of a thriving regenerative ocean farming industry.
