Restoring the Dogger Bank as the heart of the North Sea
August 2025Often referred to as the nursery of the North Sea, the Dogger Bank, once one of the most biodiverse marine areas in Europe, has suffered decades of degradation. Now, a new coalition led by the Doggerland Foundation is working to rewild this vast offshore ecosystem – restoring marine life, rebuilding shellfish reefs, and setting a bold precedent for large-scale seascape restoration.
The Dogger Bank stretches across UK, Dutch, German and Danish waters and is central to the health of the North Sea. Despite its protected status, damaging activities like bottom trawling and oil and gas extractioncontinue in much of the area. This project combines legal action and coordinated advocacy to change that – aiming to secure effective protection across 18,735 km² of seabed and enable the ecosystem to begin recovering.
We are pleased to support this ambitious initiative alongside the Endangered Landscapes and Seascapes Programme (ELSP) and other funders. Together with ELSP and a strong coalition of partners, we are proud to help advance one of the first transboundary offshore rewilding efforts in Europe.
