Protecting kelp forests in Argentine Patagonia
Por el Mar is a grassroots marine conservation organisation dedicated to protecting and restoring Argentina’s marine ecosystems. Their work focuses on protecting kelp forests, which play a critical role in supporting biodiversity, sequestering carbon, and sustaining coastal communities. They are also exploring innovative approaches, such as regenerative ocean farming, to balance ecological health with sustainable livelihoods.
Through our grant, Por el Mar will protect 86% of the kelp forest ecosystem in Argentine Patagonia, spanning 180 square kilometres. This funding will also support trials of regenerative ocean farming as an alternative to wild seaweed harvesting, reducing pressure on natural kelp forests while creating new opportunities for local communities.
