Ireland has committed to protecting 30% of its waters by 2030, including 10% under strict protection. However, the country still lacks comprehensive legislation for designating and effectively managing marine protected areas (MPAs).

We have supported the Fair Seas coalition since 2021 as it works to strengthen marine protection across Ireland. During the first phase of the campaign, Ireland’s MPA coverage increased from 2.3% to approximately 9.4%, adding more than 33,000 km² of protected waters. Fair Seas contributed to this progress by building public support for MPAs, providing scientific evidence and maintaining pressure for stronger national legislation.

We are renewing our support as Fair Seas works to build on this progress. The next phase aims to secure strong national MPA legislation and support its effective implementation, help expand Ireland’s MPA network to 20% of its waters by 2027, improve the management of existing protected areas, and advance the designation of strictly protected sites. Through advocacy and engagement with government, communities and other stakeholders, Fair Seas will work to ensure that Ireland’s expanding MPA network delivers meaningful protection for marine biodiversity.
