European Parliament adopts Nature Restoration Law

February 2024

The European Parliament has taken a pivotal step forward in safeguarding our seas with the adoption of the Nature Restoration Law (NRL).

This landmark legislation obliges EU countries to restore at least 30% of their degraded land and marine habitats by 2030 through the adoption of national restoration plans. The NRL includes binding restoration targets for marine habitats and introduces mechanisms to restrict destructive fishing practices, thereby facilitating the recovery of key marine ecosystems such as seagrass meadows and reefs.

The adoption of the NRL represents a significant milestone in environmental legislation and demonstrates a commitment to biodiversity restoration, climate resilience, and sustainable fisheries management. Responding to the collective voices of over 1 million stakeholders, including citizens, businesses, scientists, and NGOs, the Parliament has paved the way for this pioneering law to become a reality. The next crucial step involves formal approval from Member States, anticipated to occur in March or April.

As an organisation committed to protecting and restoring our planet’s biodiversity, we’re proud to have contributed to this significant milestone through our support of Oceana Europe, Seas at Risk and ClientEarth’s nature restoration campaign.
