Ensuring the High Seas Treaty becomes a reality
The High Seas Alliance is a coalition of organisations dedicated to protecting the vast expanse of ocean beyond national jurisdictions, known as the high seas. These waters, covering nearly half the planet, are vital for global biodiversity and climate regulation. The Alliance played a pivotal role in the adoption of the historic High Seas Treaty in June 2023, marking a significant step towards protecting this shared resource for future generations.
Our latest grant renews support for the High Seas Alliance, building on our previous funding during the treaty negotiation process. This funding will help drive efforts to secure ratification by at least 60 countries, enabling the treaty to enter into force by the end of 2025. Achieving this milestone is crucial for turning international commitments into actionable protections for the high seas.
