Denmark proposes ban on bottom trawling in over 17% of its waters

February 2025

The Danish government has put forward a proposal to ban destructive bottom trawling in over 17% of its marine waters, including key protected areas. This move represents an important step towards safeguarding marine ecosystems and addressing the impacts of bottom trawling on biodiversity.

The proposal follows sustained advocacy from Seas at Risk, Oceana in Europe and ClientEarth, who have been working to strengthen marine protections across the EU. While this is a welcome development, stronger action is needed to ensure that marine protected areas effectively serve their purpose.

We support the call for more ambitious, EU-wide measures to protect marine ecosystems and encourage the Danish government to vote in favour of this proposal.
