68,000 sq km of Bahamian waters to benefit from enhanced protection & management
A groundbreaking Nature Bonds initiative led by The Nature Conservancy will safeguard 68,000 km2 of Bahamian waters by 2030. This innovative project combines conservation and finance to advance global efforts to protect 30% of the world’s oceans by 2030.
Nature Bonds are a pioneering financial mechanism that restructure a country’s national debt in exchange for commitments to invest in conservation and sustainable development. In The Bahamas, this approach will unlock more than US$120 million to strengthen ocean protection and ensure the effective management of the country’s marine protected area (MPA) network. These MPAs safeguard vital ecosystems, including coral reefs, seagrass meadows, and mangrove forests, which are crucial for biodiversity, climate resilience, and sustaining livelihoods.
Globally, The Nature Conservancy’s Nature Bonds programme is enabling new protections or improved management for nearly 2.38 million square kilometres of ocean. We are pleased to support The Bahamas project alongside other Nature Bonds marine conservation projects in Seychelles, Belize, Barbados, and Gabon.
